Movie Diary 8/19/2019

Ready or Not (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, 2019). An attempt to get in on the Get Out business, mixing dark comedy with a little – and in this case, a very little – bit of political satire. Darned if there aren’t some good unclean moments along the way. (full review 8/22)

High Anxiety (Mel Brooks, 1977). It had been many years. The movie absolutely needs more Cloris Leachman and Harvey Korman, and Madeleine Kahn, too. Maybe the best thing in it is the scene with Brooks singing the title song (which he wrote), in which he morphs into a wonderful lounge act; it doesn’t have a great deal to do with the rest of the picture, but why would that be a problem? “High anxiety – you win” is underrated as a great lyric of resignation.
