Movie Diary 2/4/2020

All That Heaven Allows (Douglas Sirk, 1955). Once more, with feeling – and for a class in “The Art of Directing.”

Frantz (Francois Ozon, 2016). Didn’t know anything about this movie, and had the weird feeling in the first five minutes that I must have seen it before, except I hadn’t. But – aha – it’s based on a 1932 Lubitsch movie, Broken Lullaby, that I’d watched just last year. And the stories are very close, until they diverge, for a while. Ozon’s taste for straight-ahead melodrama is very sharp here, and in many ways the film comes off as a fine, sad relic.
