Movie Diary 5/6/2020

20 Million Miles to Earth (Nathan Juran, 1957). Not good, although Ray Harryhausen gets to make one of his creatures, an alien who tags along with an Earth mission returning home from Venus. The shots of 1950s Rome call to mind a very different cinema being hatched at this time, as though an Antonioni film were being invaded by a monster from outer space. There are some visual ideas in the creature sequences, which were essentially directed by Harryhausen rather than Juran (the journeyman who also cranked out Hellcats of the Navy, The Deadly Mantis, and The Brain from Planet Arous in the same year as this).
