Movie Diary 6/1/2020

Devs (Alex Garland, 2020). Miniseries from the director of Ex Machina, with tech gurus and heady multiverse (I guess) concepts and some very earthbound threats in the form of an old-school security chief (Zach Grenier in a rare character-actor co-lead). Unbalanced by some iffy casting, but it fills the eyes.

Love in the Afternoon (Billy Wilder, 1957). Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper, in a superbly-tuned if off-cast comedy about imagination (and surely “fascination”). Hepburn is awfully good here; the scene (shot, really) where she writes letters and then burns them is a gem of solo acting for the camera.

Paterson (Jim Jarmusch, 2016). A much-needed second look at Jarmusch’s wonderful look at the ordinary and the poetic. Which turn out to be the same thing, at least in Paterson, New Jersey.
