Movie Diary 7/21/2020

In Fabric (Peter Strickland, 2018). From the director of Berberian Sound Studio and The Duke of Burgundy. So, a must-watch. Its weirdness goes well beyond the apparent concept of a red dress that may be murderous; in fact, that comes to seem the least interesting aspect of the picture. A department store with hypnotic TV adverts and a pneumatic-tube system of making change; a floorwalker (Fatma Mohamed) with fractured locution and a fondness for dumbwaiters; the centrality of laundry machines; the buttery monstrousness of middle-management clods (Julian Barratt and Steve Oram, veterans of the Ben Wheatley universe) – everything is off, yet of a piece. There’s also a huge amount of vivid set dressing and a big role for Marianne Jean-Baptiste and some deadpan rudeness from Gwendoline Christie. So, a must-watch.
