Amulet Unit Still

Imelda Staunton, Carla Juri: Amulet (Nick Wall, courtesy Magnet Releasing)

My review this week for the Scarecrow blog, and etc.

Amulet. “Garai gets mileage out of the house’s funky plumbing, always a rich source of horror-movie eesh.”

Do look into Parallax View’s 2000 Eyes Project, a survey of reviews from twenty years ago. This week I’m represented by a mixed response to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, the year’s Oscar-winner for Best Picture and Actor. I must say after all this time I agree with my take.

More 1980s reviews posted this week at What a Feeling!, including: Alan Pakula’s Dream Lover, a curious misfire starring Kristy McNichol; Charlie Loventhal’s My Demon Lover, a disastrous Cat People update starring Scott Valentine; Harley Cokliss’s (later Cokeliss) Malone, a not-bad attempt (unsuccessful) to revive Burt Reynolds’ flagging career; Alan Parker’s Birdy, an arty thing with Nicolas Cage and Matthew Modine; and a personal favorite, Carl Schenkel’s The Mighty Quinn, a Carribbean hang-out movie with Denzel Washington and Robert Townsend.
