Movie Diary 7/28/2020

Sabine Kleist, 7 Jahre … (Helmut Dziuba, 1982). A film from East Germany about a little orphan girl who walks away from the orphanage and has encounters in Berlin over the course of a day and a half. Something like Little Fugitive, with the kid (Petra Lämmel) providing a quirky, feisty center for the winsome proceedings. Any time the movie seems like it’s in danger of steering in a conventional direction, it throws in an authentic touch.

Vagabond (Agnès Varda, 1985). Coincidentally, another film about a young wanderer, this one with much more dire stakes. A great one; my original reaction here.
