Movie Diary 9/28/2020

Prince of Darkness (John Carpenter, 1987). Under-rehearsed and sketchily-cast, this devil movie (which has certain echoes of Carpenter’s Thing) suffers from its chintzy budget. That videotape nightmare, though – I’m glad I didn’t see that as a kid.

The Reason I Jump (Jerry Rothwell, 2020). Documentary about autism, inspired by a book credited to an adolescent writer, but focusing on some very compelling examples of young people with autism (and their remarkable parents).

Zappa (Alex Winter, 2020). Are there going to be more Frank Zappa documentaries? I think I’ve had enough, but this one is nicely done, with an especially purposeful focus on the music itself, and Zappa’s serious musical ambitions.
