Martin Eden (Pietro Marcello, 2019). Jack London’s fascinating novel is translated into an Italian landscape (deliberately vague in its timeframe, except that whenever it’s happening is luscious-looking), with the strapping actor Luca Marinelli as a rough-hewn sailor who wants to become a writer. Shot on film (apparently 16 mm.?), the movie mixes moments of stray beauty, the kind of thing a budding writer would notice, with large leaps in storytelling, and more than a few political speeches.
