The Painter and the Thief (Benjamin Ree, 2020). A strange but extremely watchable documentary about a Czech painter (living in Norway) who befriends the man who stole two of her artworks from an Oslo gallery. The movie plays intriguing games with time and structure, and the two people are very compelling. The unacknowledged presence of a camera in the room becomes a troubling omission at times, and a curious choice for a film that is partly about the moral responsibility of using other people for one’s art.
