One Night in Miami (Regina King, 2020). Most of the pleasure comes from watching actors stretch out: Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown, Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke, and Eli Goree as Cassius Clay – historical figures crowded together in a Miami motel room, in playwright Kemp Powers’ concept. King, a divine actress herself, gets a supple flow going with this quartet, as they slip from humor to hostility to awareness of their place in the cultural firmament. It’s held back mostly by the flat-footed dialogue, including some bothersome anachronisms.
Mean Girls (Mark Waters, 2004). The movie’s been around since 2004? Weird. Anyway, it’s still funny, smart, and does its thing nicely.
