Swallow (Carlo Mirabella-Davis, 2020). Privileged housewife (she is specifically that) Haley Bennett begins swallowing small, difficult objects, an intriguing situation that brings about a psychologically credible but somehow let-downing exploration of her past. Admirable in lots of ways, but maybe over-designed, a little airless. Good cast that includes Elizabeth Marvel and David Rasche as the heroine’s dreadful rich in-laws, and Denis O’Hare in a ten-minute gem.
Five (Arch Oboler, 1951). The atomic holocaust has happened, and a handful of people survive. This was one of the first of these movies, made independently by radio pioneer Oboler. It has its moments, including legit stabs at visual dynamics, curious bits of poetry, and some kind of bohemian spirit.
