Movie Diary 2/3/2021

Hillbilly Elegy (Ron Howard, 2020). Where to begin? I guess you could call this the culmination of everything that’s gone awry in Howard’s directing since his promising start, with its flat style and collection of villains. Mayberry becomes Middleton, but the movie has no discernible viewpoint on any of the lousiness, or on Glenn Close’s matriarch and her really pretty poisonous assertion that there’s nuthin’ more important than family. And it all ends with real-life photographs of the people depicted herein. And how, exactly, is any of this elegaic?
