Movie Diary 11/1/2021

Censor (Prano Bailey-Bond, 2021). UK art-horror with an ideally-cast lead actress (Niamh Algar) and plenty of confidence. The prim central character works as a government censor of “video nasties,” which frightened Britain in the 1980s; a plot point in one of the movies she reviews reminds her of a tragedy from her past. This film might not be at the same level of other British unsettlers that do similar things – Berberian Sound Studio and Saint Maud, for instance – but its design and weirdness never seem quirky for their own sake, and it’s all very concentrated (84 minutes) and taut. It’s a movie that appreciates how a woman ticking her eyeglasses back up on her nose can be a delicious measure of character.
