Movie Diary 1/2/2022

Wings of Desire (Wim Wenders, 1987). Last movie of 2021. I dunno, it seemed right. Strange somehow to see the film from a distance in time, with the Berlin Wall long fallen, and the main actors all dead. My original review is online.

What’s Up, Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich, 1972). First movie of 2022. This time I was struck by how well the absence of music in the chase scene works. This film is also very funny.

Children of Paradise (Marcel Carne, 1945). Big characters, big canvas, big running time. Just a re-visit after a long time. A literary kind of film, save for what the actors bring to it, but that’s a lot.

CODA (Sian Heder, 2021). A teen (Emilia Jones) wants to sing, but her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsmur) and her brother (Daniel Durant) want her to say in the family fishing business – not least because she’s the only hearing member of the clan. The film is almost exactly what you’d expect, and if you know that going in, it plays fine.
