Movie Diary 5/2/2002

Everything Everywhere All at Once (Dan Kwan, Daniel Schweinert, 2022). Might just write something about this. Meantime, a revelation: the superb performance by Ke Huy Quan, whose career began as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. There is so much that is clever about this film, but I also have to ask why it looks so dingy, and why it is compelled to tire us all out.

Pyaasa (Guru Dutt, 1957). A classic title of Indian cinema, a big melodrama with songs about a forlorn poet caught between two women and an unappreciative world. I confess I watched this while slightly sleepy, and the effect was to slip something mildly hallucinogenic into the movie’s fascinating studio-bound strangeness.
