Movie Diary 8/31/2022

Putney Swope (Robert Downey, 1969). The counterculture hit still looks distinctive today: saucy and aggressively bizarre and Pythonesque at times. Its overall arrangement feels as slapdash as any other sketch-comedy film from this era, and yet it carries more cinematic dash within scenes. And the advertising spoofs are still pretty funny. The time capsule nature of the thing is not to be sneezed at, either; if the movie once existed on what was the cutting edge, it now provides a snapshot of the moment.
