Movie Diary 5/5/2010

Women’s Prison (Lewis Seiler, 1955). Surely this low-budget Columbia noir turned into grist for the films of George and Mike Kuchar, or at least became a Carol Burnett sketch. Ida Lupino is the warden of the straightjacket-happy femme-packed hellhole, with Jan Sterling, Cleo Moore and Audrey Totter as inmates awash in platinum. A decidedly lesser effort from the recent “Bad Girls” DVD set.

Paper Man (Kieran and Michele Mulroney, 2009). Jeff Daniels gets to go for it as a blocked writer sweating out the beginnings of a new novel, and Lisa Kudrow and Emma Stone add value – if only this seemed more like a movie. (full review 5/7)
